Iconic Logan Circle Location to Get Facelift

Brand new renderings have been revealed for a proposed mixed-use development at a rather iconic Logan Circle location.

The project, located at 1341 14th Street NW, will be comprised of two lots, one which currently houses a three-story commercial building and one which houses a vacant one-story commercial retail building, most recently occupied by Barrel House Liquors. While the three-story commercial building will remain unchanged, the former home of Barrel House Liquors will be redeveloped with a seven-story building with ground-floor retail topped by residential space.

The plans for the project were revealed in November 2016 by UrbanTurf, who reported that the seven-story project would offer up to 40 residential units with the iconic c. 1945-built barrel entry remaining in tact.

In an application filed with the D.C. Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA), further, newer details have been revealed. The new project will overhang the Lustine Building with a penthouse topping the seventh floor. The entire project will span approximately 36,549 square feet with 29,365 square feet devoted to residential uses and 2,903 square feet devoted to retail and commercial uses.

In order to construct the development, the project will have to get relief from the BZA on the penthouse height, guardrail setbacks, the 45-degree angle setback, and the size of the rear yard.

The fact that the barrel entry is planned to remain will likely please neighbors in the community. Pepin Andrew Tuma, an ANC 2F representative, told The Washington Post in October 2015 that he hoped to designate the barrel as a historic landmark. The interest later fizzled out, though.

While the barrel remains, Barrel House Liquors still had to relocate next door to 1339 14th Street NW in February 2016.

The Historic Preservation Review Board approved in concept the proposed design at its February 27, 2017 meeting. Before the groundbreaking of the project, which is slated for the fall of 2017, the owner hopes to host a series of experiential community and art events.
